Advice on protecting the elderly from house fires

Did you know that elderly people aged 65 years or older account for about 70% of deaths due to house fires? While gas stoves are the most common cause of fires, many fires also start in kitchen appliances and other sources, making it necessary to be especially careful during the colder months of the year.

Small changes in lifestyle can reduce the risk of fires (use the checklist to see what you need to do to make your home safer)

□ Do not leave gas stoves unattended
□ Do not smoke in bed or leave a cigarette unattended
□ Do not place flammable items around the stove
□ Clean outlets and plugs regularly
