The power of sport to create a society in which everyone can participate

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have three basic concepts, one of which is “diversity and harmony.” The goal was to create a Games where people from all over the world could come together and reaffirm the importance of diversity and harmony irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disabilities, etc., serving as an opportunity to foster a society in harmony.
Sports are a universal culture that can be enjoyed by people all over the world according to their interests and aptitudes. When a diverse group of people play the same sport together, it not only creates a sense of unity and vitality among the participants, but also provides an opportunity for them to respect and recognize each other’s personality and individuality. Let’s take a step toward creating a harmonious society while enjoying sports.

Sports that anyone can participate in: Initiatives in Naka Ward

In conjunction with the Tokyo 2020 Games, Naka Ward Office has been working to create opportunities for people to come into contact with parasports by holding events where they can experience boccia, blind soccer, wheelchair basketball, and other sports.
In addition, we have been working to popularize boccia, pétanque, and other sports that can be enjoyed by people of all ages under the Yokohama Sawayaka Sports initiative.
Many local residents participate in the annual Naka Ward Pétanque Friendship Tournament held by the Naka Ward Sawayaka Sports Promotion Committee.

Boccia and pétanque tournaments attract a wide variety of people, from small children to the elderly, and the atmosphere is very friendly. I’m not a good speaker, but I often talk about various things with the other team members at the tournaments and interact with them. I feel that I can broaden my horizons by challenging myself to do various things without shrinking back.

Comments from the organizer

Mr. Tadashi Akagi, Chairman
Naka Ward Sawayaka Sports Promotion Committee
What makes Sawayaka Sports so appealing is the fact that both people with disabilities and able-bodied people can enjoy these activities together. People with disabilities have been participating in the Friendship Tournament for more than a decade now, and have even won on some occasions. By holding the event in a game format, the participants have the opportunity to interact with each other, which I find very rewarding. These tournaments are held every year in June at the Naka Sports Center, and in November at Yokohama Yoshida Junior High School. Please feel free to invite your friends and join us!

Raising children

Raising children is a difficult task in any country.
But it seems that the ways in which people bring up children differ from country to country...

[Ms. Yamashita, a friendly neighbor]
Jun sure has grown since we last met!

[Ms. Kim (from South Korea), who is raising a child]
Yes, she’s already turned 6 months old. She eats a lot of baby food.
She likes rice porridge with minced beef mixed in.

What? She’s already eating beef?
In Japan, we’d usually give food like that when the child is a little older.
I guess baby food is something that differs by country.
Have you gotten used to parenting?

Yes, I’m getting there, but it would be nice to have someone to talk to about my parenting concerns.
It would be nice to have a chat with someone to recharge my batteries....

If that’s the case, there is a plaza for parents and children in Naka Ward called Nonbirinko.
People like you with roots overseas also go there, so I think you would fit in nicely.
I recommend it because the staff will listen to your child-rearing problems and you can meet other people who are raising children.
