Places of learning

There are a variety of places of learning for children with special needs.

Regular school classes

Municipal schools in Yokohama City have taken steps to make lessons more accessible, such as through the use of specific teaching methods and teaching materials.

Classes for students with special needs

These classes are run in small groups with the aim of providing a program of learning according to individual needs of each and every child.
Classes for students with special needs are provided at all municipal elementary and junior high schools in Yokohama City.

Coaching classes for children with special needs

This is a place for children with low-level disabilities enrolled in regular school classes to come and receive special tuition tailored to their individual needs.
Eligible students attend a school with coaching classes for children with special needs to receive tuition.
Coaching classes for children with special needs are provided at 22 schools in Yokohama City.

Special needs schools

These are places where children whose lives are being affected by their disabilities can come to learn how to gain independence and lead fulfilling lives.
There are schools for different types of disabilities, such as intellectual disabilities or physical disabilities.

Necessary procedures

If you would like your child to attend classes for students with special needs, coaching classes for children with special needs, or a special needs school, you need to apply for a consultation at the Special Needs Education Center.

Where to consult

If you would like your child to attend classes for students with special needs, coaching classes for children with special needs, or a special needs school, please apply for a consultation at the Special Needs Education Center.
*You can request to have an interpreter present during the consultation. Please state on the application form which language you require.

If your child is due to start elementary student or you will be moving to Yokohama City

Please download the application form for a consultation, fill it in, and send it by post.

Following receipt of the application form, the Special Needs Education Center will contact the child's guardians to arrange a consultation.

If your child is already attending a municipal elementary or junior high school in Yokohama City

Please inform your child's school that you wish to arrange a consultation at the Special Needs Education Center and receive an application form.
Once you have filled in the form, submit it to your child's school.
You will receive a letter of notification through the school once a date for the consultation has been decided.

On the day of the consultation

Guardians and children are to come to the consultation together.
Consultations are held from Monday to Friday. Consultations are not held on weekends, national holidays or during the New Year holiday season.
Consultations last around 2 hours.
Consultations consist of a meeting with a counsellor, an IQ test for the child, etc.
