At the Dawn of the 2021 I wish to celebrate from my heart that we have all been able to welcome in this new year. This will be a year when we, the citizens and business people of Yokohama, will all join forces to strive toward achieving a safe and secure life for ourselves and the continued growth of our city into the future in a society where we will be coexisting with the new corona virus. I have no doubt that the virus will be brought under control in the near future. From here on out, we will need to look to the future coolly and objectively, and advance without hesitation. This spring the Yokohama campus of Kanagawa University opens in the Minato Mirai 21 district, and the new “Yokohama Air Cabin” ropeway system will also enter operation, bringing even more vitality to Yokohama’s downtown districts. We will hold Garden Necklace Yokohama flower shows in spring and autumn, setting the stage for enjoying flowers and greenery in advance of the International Horticultural Exposition Yokohama to be held in 2027. At the same time, we will be moving ahead with preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games, Dance Dance Dance@YOKOHAMA 2021 (provisional name), and other events. We will also be putting energy into further urban development in the Kannai and Kangai districts and into revitalizing Yokohama’s suburban districts. At the same time, we will be moving ahead on IR (integrated resorts), a national undertaking that will help sustain our future economic growth, while continuing feasibility studies into the construction of a new theatrical center for the city. Across the board we are putting in place measures for alluring city planning, and for Yokohama’s sustainable development. The city of Yokohama has come this far by working simultaneously to strengthen our countermeasures against the new corona virus and revitalize our city’s economy. Going forward, we are resolved to continue to pour energy into municipal administration, mustering all our strength to prevent the rapid spread of the new corona virus and stave off the collapse of our medical system while at the same time providing support to and encouraging the digitalization of the city’s small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) and our shopping districts. We will also be addressing the challenge of decarbonization as we do everything possible to revitalize the city economy. Beginning with the launch of junior high school lunches this coming April, we will be further reinforcing our measures to support child-rearing, education, welfare, advance multiculturalism, and strengthen fire prevention and fire mitigation, all the while supporting cultural and artistic activities in our city. I ask for your continued support in all of our endeavors. Hayashi Fumiko Mayor of Yokohama A Wealth of Charm on Shotengai Shopping Streets #Security and safety #Shopping streets meeting the challenge Shotengai shopping streets in the city are making vigorous anti-coronavirus efforts, including sanitizing and avoidance of the “Three C’s” – Closed spaces; Crowded places; Close-contact settings – so that local people can visit the shops safely and with confidence. Effort 1: Home-delivery service launched! Mikawaya Roku-chan (Minamikawa Shop Association in Kanazawa Ward) When the stay home recommendation was issued in April due to the spread of new coronavirus, it became harder for, in particular, the elderly and families with children to go out. The service – called Mikawaya Roku-chan – delivers food and commodities to individual homes on behalf of shops on the shopping street. The service does not rely on any existing commercial delivery system or company; rather, the community itself provides it, drawing on local power. Effort 2: An event of ideas for a society “with corona”! “Kohoku Shopping Street Choi-Yori-Sanpo” (Strolling and Dropping In) (Federation of Kohoku Shop Associations in Kohoku Ward) In Kohoku Ward, in response to the government’s “Go To Shotengai Campaign,” a non-contact mobile-phone stamp rally was held in December 2020, in which people enjoyed dropping into shops while observing anti-corona measures. Eleven shopping streets in the ward participated in the event. Mobile-phone stamp rally (December 2020) Effort 3: Shopping Street Shares Hygienic Measures with Local Community! Shopping street hygienic measures (Totsukajuku Honobono Shop Association in Totsuka Ward) This shopping street uses equipment to produce acidic electrolytic water (disinfectant), something that can also be done at home. The water is distributed to shops on the street and used to create an environment where people can enjoy shopping with peace of mind. The association also donates the disinfectant to elementary and junior-high schools in the area. Like a wave, prevention of infection is moving from the street into the community.
