Preventing the Spread of New Corona Virus Infections
In order to prevent the spread of infection by the new corona virus, the City of Yokohama is taking measures prioritizing the health and safety of all our citizens. Giving first priority to the health and safety of our elementary, junior and high school students, we have temporarily closed all of Yokohama’s 510 municipal elementary, middle, and high schools. Regarding city facilities used by the public, we have also closed all of our facilities with the exception of selected welfare and other institutions. We have further either cancelled or postponed to a later date all planned public events and other activities sponsored by the city. We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to all of the organizers and to all of the citizens of Yokohama for their great understanding and cooperation.
In order to minimize the impact of the virus on the city’s economy, we are also taking steps to bolster our city’s financial support for all of our small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As part of these efforts, we have established a Special Management Consultation Service Window as well as the city’s own special fund within the framework of our institutional financing system. Going forward we will continue to stand by all of our SMEs and to find new ways to offer you support.
My request to all the citizens of Yokohama is that we all continue to work as hard as you have all been doing already to prevent the further spread of infections by observing those golden rules: “Wash your hands thoroughly,” “Cough with care,” and “Lots of rest + balanced diet + adequate sleep.” Please continue to act calmly based on the reliable and accurate information provided by the national government, Kanagawa Prefecture, and the City of Yokohama.
Going forward we will continue to do all that it takes to protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens and sustain our city’s social and economic activities. I ask for the continued cooperation of all of you, the citizens and businesspeople of the City of Yokohama.

Hayashi Fumiko
Mayor of Yokohama

Preventing the Spread of New Corona Virus Infections
The core fundamentals of preventing the spread of any infectious disease—washing your hands thoroughly and practicing good coughing etiquette—are also effective at preventing the spread of the new corona virus. In addition, it is essential that you eat a balanced diet, get adequate sleep, and otherwise maintain a healthy rhythm in your life in order not to weaken your own immune system.

Designated Boundaries of the “Minato-mirai 21 District” Non-smoking Zone to Be Expanded Effective July 2020
Until now the “Minato-mirai 21 District” non-smoking zone has referred to an area of Yokohama centered on Sakuragicho Station. Beginning this July, the designated boundaries will be further expanded to encompass the area around the new Yokohama City Hall.

■	What is a “Non-smoking Zone”?
A non-smoking zone is a zone within a priority city beautification district where it is necessary to ban smoking in outdoor public spaces in order to prevent littering with cigarette butts, accidental cigarette burns, and other unsightly blemishes.
Presently eight districts in Yokohama have been designated “non-smoking zones,” beginning with Yokohama Station.

■	What will happen following the designation of the non-smoking zone?
	Smoking cigarettes in outdoors public spaces will be prohibited (including simply holding a lit cigarette).
	Designated smoking spots will be set up within the non-smoking zone. Please use these spots if you wish to smoke.
	“No-smoking zone guidance officers” will patrol the zone.
	A ¥2,000 fine will be levied on offenders.

Under the ordinance, it is forbidden to throw away cigarette butts anywhere in Yokohama.
Smoking while walking is also prohibited city-wide.
