Yokohama City Hall Relocation April 13 (Mon.) ― Partial launch of services June 29 (Mon.) Complete launch of services Toward a City Hall Our Citizens Will Love Construction work on the eighth city hall building in Yokohama’s long history concluded at the end of January on Kitanaka-dori Street in Naka Ward’s south district. City services will begin to relocate from their current locations to the new city hall building beginning in April, and our new city hall will begin full operations in June. The new city hall building will bring together in one place all of the many city service windows that are now scattered across multiple buildings, enabling Yokohama’s citizens and businesspeople alike to use them more efficiently. In the process of creating a city hall that will graciously serve all our citizens, be it with the new facility’s multilingual signage, its rest and changing stations for visitors with babies and small children, or its multipurpose toilets for individuals with disabilities, we have also reviewed the way our own city staff perform their duties as we have designed the new building. At Yokohama’s new city hall, we will stand ready to serve you in a manner that meets all your expectations. The new city hall building has also been designed and built to be extremely resilient in the case of earthquakes, and comes equipped with sophisticated disaster prevention functions. In times of major disasters, it will serve as a disaster management control tower and headquarters, protecting and guarding your safety and your peace of mind. We have also incorporated many environmentally friendly facilities and functions, including making maximum use of natural energy. The low-rise atrium section of our new city hall is a welcoming and liberating three-story-high open space with light pouring in through the ceiling and high glass walls. For the duration of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games we will be hosting a live site in the atrium with giant video screens where you can enjoy watching the competitions. In addition, we have created a promenade and waterside plaza along the banks of the Ooka River that flows right before you when you step out of the building as a place for all to rest and relax. Restaurants, cafes and other commercial establishments will also be moving into the first and second floors of the building, so please feel welcome to come to our new city hall at any time just to enjoy! Ever since the birth of Yokohama’s first city hall in 1889, generation after generation of Yokohama city halls have weathered vicissitudes like the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the Yokohama firebombing of May 1945 and have gone on to serve and grow along with the city itself. We will ensure that this our newest city hall will continue to welcome visitors from within Yokohama and beyond, becoming a place that that will be loved and taken into the hearts of all our citizens for years to come.
