The museum houses a rich collection of over 12,000 works of art with a focus on art created since the Port of Yokohama first opened to the world. It also regularly holds a kaleidoscope of programs and events that all the citizens of Yokohama can enjoy. Every time I visit the museum’s unique and varied exhibitions, I am excited to find what will awaits me next, and always I come away moved and thrilled by new discoveries. The museum also offers a rich array of visitor programs that provide opportunities to create your own artworks or enjoy even more deeply what the museum has on display. The museum’s “Children’s Workshop” provides a venue for kids to see art with their own eyes, and to touch and experience art for themselves. You can watch the participating children, their eyes shining with excitement, using paint, clay and other media to make whatever kinds of artwork their spirits move them to create. The theme of the museum as it celebrates its 30th anniversary is “Linking People/Humanity and the Future through Art.” Culture and the arts infuse our lives with color, enrich our hearts and cultivate creativity and a rich sensitivity in our children. And even more, art has a vast power to link and bring people together, transcending borders and eras, giving birth to a multiplicity of new encounters.
