When I catch traces of their sweet and elegant scent wafting over, it somehow makes me feel a bit warmer. The buds of leaves on trees along our streets and in parks are still tightly closed, and the waters of our rivers have a chilly glint, but the small patches of sunlight presage the arrival of spring. Once we pass "risshun," the day marking the beginning of spring in the lunar calendar and occurring about 45 days after the winter solstice, the city becomes wrapped in a festive mood. The plum trees are in full bloom everywhere, and there are various festivities to celebrate the lunar New Year's holiday in Yokohama's Chinatown. In what has become an annual event for both photographers and people who love to look at photos, Photo Yokohama 2018 is held at the same time. At sites here and there in the city, visitors can admire all sorts of photos, including works exuding the charms of bygone Yokohama, news snapshots capturing the spirit of their times, and photos taken by children with coaching by professionals. Even when blown by freezing winds, our streets are charged with vitality. In just a little while, it will be spring. The days are gradually becoming longer. How about looking for signs of spring in the sparkle nature flashes for an instant and amid the bustle on our streets?
