キャプション Asuka II (on the far side of Osanbashi Pier) and Pacific Venus (on the near side of Osanbashi Pier) Thoughts at the start of 2018 Fumiko Hayashi Mayor of Yokohama Happy New Year, everyone! My best wishes for all at the start of this new year. Last year, we hosted the 33rd National Urban Greenery Fair Yokohama, a festival of flowers and greenery, which was a resounding success, thanks to the support of many citizens, companies, and organizations. The year also saw our hosting of the 50th Asian Development Bank Annual Meeting and Yokohama Triennale 2017, and advancement by the Yokohama DeNA BayStars into the Japan Series. These and other events greatly added to Yokohama’s vibrancy, and the supportive feelings of all concerned gave Yokohama a big push in 2017. This year, too, is going to raise Yokohama’s appeal and vibrancy even higher as the city hosts events including Dance Dance Dance @ YOKOHAMA 2018 and the ITU World Triathlon Yokohama. Meanwhile, we have formulated a new medium-term four-year plan and are going to steadily implement the initiatives for the first year of it. We also plan to make fuller provisions for childcare and education as well as welfare and medical measures to support the lives of our citizens, and energize Yokohama’s economy as well. Similarly, we are firmly taking steps to improve the international competitiveness of the Port of Yokohama, bolster the functions of the central waterfront district, enhance the vitality of suburban districts, promote initiatives to prevent disasters, and improve the urban infrastructure. We are going to make a citywide effort toward the sustained growth of Yokohama and assurance of the safety and security of the lives of its citizens into the future. We are also making solid preparations for the 2019 Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development and the Rugby World Cup 2019TM, and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the succeeding year. Let us all join hands again this year in an all-Yokohama effort to assure the heightened degree of vitality imbuing Yokohama we have achieved so far and link it to the future. I am counting on your cooperation!
