Looking back on 2017
Fumiko Hayashi
Mayor of Yokohama
This year, too, is almost over. What kind of year was it for you? Thanks to your support, 2017 was a very fruitful one for Yokohama.
One of the highlights was the National Urban Greenery Fair Yokohama held in spring. With the cooperation of all concerned, the Fair unfolded in our parks, avenues, and natural tracts, and decorated our streets with many flower beds and blooms in a manner keeping with Yokohama’s character. Every time I saw the smiling faces of visitors enjoying themselves in Yokohama during the Fair, it brought home to me all over again the power that flowers and greenery have to gladden and soothe the soul. The enormous flower bed at Satoyama Garden also opened this autumn and was a huge success.
Certainly another highlight in fall was the activity of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. They unfortunately did not win the Japan Series, but their many stupendous plays and dramatic games excited the whole city. They gave courage, hope, and cheer to us all.
This year is the 90th anniversary of instatement of the ward system in Yokohama, which began in 1927. That was also a landmark year that saw the birth of five wards. I am genuinely grateful to all who have continued to support our city and instill it with new appeal while preserving the history and tradition passed down by our ancestors.
In the coming year as well, I hope to keep Yokohama a city where people can meet, come together, and lead fulfilling lives. With best wishes to all for a happy holiday season!
