Taking “connectivity” and “isolation” as its theme, Yokohama Triennale 2017 presents a rich diversity of works of art by about 40 artists viewing our “now” from those perspectives. Of particular note is the huge installation* by Ai Weiwei, who attached lifeboats and life jackets to its exterior walls and pillars to call attention to the refugee problems. * In installations, objects and equipment are attached to walls or placed on floors in the exhibition space. In the new works, he resurrects legendary thinkers and art historians who were born in Yokohama and were active in the Meiji era (1868 – 1912). The three years since “First Contact,” the title of the first installment, have seen the deepening of connectivity and mutual understanding between the people who became acquainted through it.
