You must visit Yokohama in summer! Fumiko Hayashi Mayor of Yokohama Last year, Yokohama attracted a total of 37.61 million visitors who spent a total of 318.8 billion yen. Both of these figures were record-highs. In all parts of Yokohama, from Yamashita Park, the Minato Mirai 21 district, the Motomachi district, Chinatown, and other districts in the waterfront area to the suburban districts with their rich natural settings, events are held in all four seasons. Besides our citizens, these events draw large numbers of visitors and are very vibrant affairs. It will soon be summer, and a host of fun-filled events are planned for Yokohama again this year. One of them is Yokohama Zoo at Night 2016, which will be held at Kanazawa Zoo, where visitors can observe koalas and eastern gray kangaroos, and two other zoos in the city. Visitors can get a precious look at the animals engaged in activity different from that in the daytime. Another is Maritime City Yokohama Umihaku 2016, where visitors will be able to have fun learning about the wonder of the sea. I would especially recommend it as a source of themes for free study by children during summer vacation. In summer, it is a good idea to go to art and natural science museums to cool off and spend some edifying hours in the process. “Where should we go and what should we do this year?” With the approach of summer vacation, no doubt many people are enthusiastically making plans for outings or vacations with their children. Summer is the one time of year when they can take a fairly long span of time off. Why not use it as an opportunity to take up challenges long dreamt of or deepen communication with family and friends? Children can make memories they will savor forever as adults. I would like to encourage all to make such summer-vacation memories in Yokohama, which offers an abundance of nature and contact with culture and the arts. The renovated Region of Oceania Invitation to Kanagawa Zoo The viewing path within the Region of Oceania exhibit brings visitors very close to eastern gray kangaroos. In the rest area, visitors can observe the blue-winged kookaburra through glass windows. Besides watching the cute koalas, they can also visit a summer-only zone where beetles crawl around freely, and see an Indian elephant in the Region of Eurasia section. Preventing heatstroke ~ Need for caution even indoors ~ Beware of heatstroke on days like this!  High temperature  High humidity  Little or no breeze  Sudden rise in temperature To prevent heatstroke: Take liquids and salt frequently, a little at a time Wear cool clothes and use a parasol or put on a hat Take little rests frequently Try to stay in the shade When you have heatstroke  Take refuge in a cool place  Take off your clothes and cool your body off  Take liquids and salt Cautions for the elderly  Take liquids frequently, a little at a time, even if you are not thirsty!  Frequently check the temperature in your room The elderly are at particular risk of heatstroke because their bodies are slower to react to efforts to lower body temperature, and they are liable to be unaware of the onset of heatstroke. Infants and toddlers require particular attention! Infants and toddlers require particular attention, because their physical faculties for adjustment of bodily temperature are not yet fully developed. On sunny days, the temperature is higher closer to the ground. Infants and toddlers are therefore in a much hotter environment than adults. The exercise of ingenuity to pass the summer in greater coolness and comfort is linked to savings of electricity and conservation of energy. Try and practice such measures, but make sure you do not put an undue strain on yourself.  Keep the air conditioning thermostat of the air conditioner in the cooling mode at 28 degrees.  Keep the air conditioner on for only short periods, and only when necessary (but do not overdo it).  Interiors are more comfortable if an electric fan is used in combination with the air conditioner.  Keep sunlight out with curtains or screens.  When you are going out, it is effective to close the curtains even during the daytime.
