Under the "Yokohama City Ordinance Relating to the Prevention of Littering of Empty Cans, Cigarette Butts, and Other Garbage (No Littering/No Smoking Ordinance)", efforts are being made to create a clean and safe city, encourage the wise use of resources, and maintain a pleasant urban environment.
In Yokohama, littering is prohibited in all areas of the city.
Littering empty cans, garbage, cigarette butts and the like is not permitted.
Violators may have to pay a fine of 20,000 yen or less.
●Areas where city beautification efforts are particularly emphasized
In areas where it is particularly important to prevent littering of empty cans, cigarette butts, and other garbage (25 areas within the city), sidewalk cleaning and public relations activities are being actively undertaken.
No Smoking While Walking
In all areas of the city, smoking while walking should be avoided.
When smoking outside, please carry a personal ash tray.
Also, in order to prevent burns from lighted cigarettes and promote city beautification by decreasing litter, there are seven "No Smoking Areas" where smoking is not permitted outside in public areas.
●No Smoking Areas
Yokohama station area
Minato Mirai 21 area
Tsurumi station area
Higashi Kanagawa station/Nakakido station area
Shin Yokohama station area
Totsuka station area
Smoking is not allowed in the No Smoking Areas
(In addition to actually smoking, "smoking" also includes holding a lighted cigarette.)
People who violate the no smoking area are subject to punishment (administrative fine of 2000 yen).
Beautification Task Force Members, who are Yokohama municipal employees, patrol the No Smoking Areas and collect administrative fines from violators.
