Driver's Licenses

Visitors to Japan who hold a valid international driving license issued by a member country of the Geneva Convention on Traffic Rules and Regulations can drive in Japan.

• Obtaining a Japanese Driver's License (With Valid License in Other Country)
  Please inquire at a Driver's License Office about obtaining a Japanese license by presenting a foreign driver's license.
• Obtaining a Japanese Driver's License (Without a Valid License in Other Country)
  In general, persons who wish to obtain a new driver's license in Japan must complete a course at an authorized driving school and then apply for the license at a Driver's License Office. In this case, the applicant must take a driving test and written test (English available).
