Yokohama has been taking active approaches to international contribution for more than half a century. Along with the remarkable strides being made by emerging economies in recent years, it has found increasing opportunities for pursuit of technical cooperation in new fields. The urban problems that have surfaced in the concerned countries were once also faced by Yokohama.
In response, Yokohama is promoting a project titled "Yokohama Partnership of Resources and Technologies" (Y-PORT) in parallel with its on-going efforts of international contribution.
Japan has few natural resources of its own, and development of trade and interchange with other countries has been indispensable; without them, it would be impossible for its citizens to successfully engage in various socioeconomic activities or to enjoy an affluent and full life themselves. Yokohama regards contribution to world peace and prosperity as an important part of its duty, also to help the city retain its vibrancy.
Yokohama has been involved in programs of technical assistance in such forms as dispatch of experts to and acceptance of trainees from other countries since 1963. It is also energetically promoting projects of intercity and international cooperation.
