Background

 Fukaya Communication Site is a U.S. military installation, located in Izumi-ku, Yokohama City. It has unique circular shape with 1km-diameter (77ha-wide, owned entirely by the Japanese government), and is a valuable large-scale spatial resource in suburban Tokyo Metropolitan Area.
 Fukaya Communication Site is one of the installations in Yokohama that the governments of the United States and Japan made an agreement on returning to Japan. In 2009, the 150th Anniversary of the Opening of Yokohama Port, "Idea Competition for the Fukaya Communication Site" was held to draw attention, promoting its return, as well as encouraging a number of creative and outstanding ideas for the future of the Site.

Eligibility/Competition details

Competition was open to all individuals or groups of individuals, regardless of nationality, age, certificate, etc. for two categories: "General" and "Professional."
Ideas were presented with the following two aspects for the Communication Site:
1) "Response to Social Demands" e.g. global warming, or disaster management measures
2) "Contribution to Local Communities" e.g. public use, community revitalization

In November 2009, panel exhibition was held with entries selected at the first screening (63 total) and public comments were sought (1,622 visitors at the exhibition with 311 comments).
Numerous comments were made on the entries with themes in nature, people exchange, child-care, education, and agriculture, etc.

Awarding ceremony,
Symposium On January 30, 2010, "Idea Competition on Fukaya Communication Site, Awarding ceremony and Symposium" were held at Yokohama Symposia.
At the symposium, panelists and audience enjoyed lively discussion on "Idea Competition and Future Development of Fukaya Communication Site."
