Yamashita Park was built upon the ashes of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. It was completed in 1930 and still remains in the same location that it was orignially built. In front of Yamashita Park sits the passenger boat Hikawa-maru, formerly called "the Queen of the Pacific". It was in service for 30 years from 1930. The luxurious interior of the liner is open to the public, including the guest room formerly used by Charlie Chaplin.
Many statues that decorate the park: this one, the Boyscouts of America Statue, commemorates the relationship between the American and Japanese branches. Behind is the Hikawa-Maru With a spectacular view of Yokohama Bay. Food stalls, chess spots, cultural attractions, landmarks, and most importantly, spots to take siestas are in abundance through this magnificent park. Truely, Yokohama’s Yamashita Park leaves only a blanket and a well-packed picnic basket to be desired. |
