Buying a subway pass

When to buy a subway pass

◆Commuter/student passes

New passes: From 7 days before start of use
Renewals: From 14 days before start of new period of use

For subway passes, we recommend using PASMO.

Subway passes are of two kinds: PASMO smart cards and magnetic passes.
Magnetic passes have to be removed from their cases to be used at the ticket gate. With a PASMO card, however, you can just touch it against the reader without having to remove it. As well as the peace of mind that comes from knowing you can get your PASMO card replaced if you lose it, you can also just hop on a train or bus if you top it up in advance and any excess fare will be automatically deducted at the other end of your journey.
As you can put both bus and train passes on the same card, you only need the one card when you go out. PASMO is also better for the environment, because the data on your card can be added to and updated so you don't need to throw it away when your details change.
Please say if you have a PASMO card when buying a pass.
※Not available in some cases. For more information about PASMO, see here.
