Yokohama's Leading Industries

Yokohama has a lot of companies of various sizes and industries including small/medium companies with advanced technologies.
Yokohama has the potential to respond to the needs of the new industries when these companies and their skills and technologies work in cooperation with one another.
Currently, the City is working to develop and concentrate advanced industries especially such as IT and Biotechnology.

Yokohama has many IT firms which accounts for 2.4% of the total number of IT firms nationwide. The number of IT-related employees is about 82,000 and accounts for 2.9% of the total number of IT-related employees nationwide. This ranks 3rd in Japan behind Tokyo 23 wards and the City of Osaka.

Hardware industry There is a concentration of mobile and digital appliance industries in the inland industrial area of the city. There is also a heavy concentration of semiconductor businesses around Shin-Yokohama Station . Over 300 IT firms are concentrated in this area of only 80 hectares. Solution industry Major IT solution-related companies and small and medium sized companies that support them are located particulally around Yokohama Station. Contents industry Kannai and Yamashita District are the center of contents industry, its majority is design and information technology industry.

The City of Yokohama, in an effort to develop and integrate bio-related industries, has been developing the Yokohama Science Frontier and has established "Yokohama Joint Research Center", "Leading Venture Plaza", "Yokohama Bio Industry Center (YBIC)" and "Yokohama Biopharmaceutical Research and Development Center (YBIRD)" there. New cooperation and new business opportunities will be expected among the companies in the facilities.
