Yokohama to host a series of cutting-edge Image art events

Media Practice 08-09 / Pocket Films Festival in Japan 2009

YOKOHAMA – Thursday, January 15, 2009 –Yokohama will host a series of events focusing on cutting-edge art and expression in January 2009. The main events is “Media Practice 08-09,” an interactive image exhibition by the New Media Course at Tokyo University of the Arts, running from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25. The other is “Pocket Films Festival in Japan 2009,” a film festival featuring films shot on mobile phones, taking place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25. A range of ambitious works will be shown at both events.

Media Practice 08-09 will showcase works by the likes of students, graduates and teaching staff from the New Media Course at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media. The university’s New Media Course combines artistic expression with science and technology in a bid to find brand new means of expression, with Media Practice 08-09 providing an opportunity to inform the public about trends and issues in media expression.
Pocket Films Festival in Japan 2009, which will be held for the second time this year, is aimed at demonstrating how far mobile phone film footage has spread around the world as a mean of expression. With this in mind, prize winning and other entries from similar mobile phone film festivals in France, Canada, Italy and Russia will be screened as part of the festival in an effort to showcase trends around the world.

There will also be two graduate exhibitions by students majoring in Inter Media Art at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts, entitled “Sentanmaru” and “Project the Projectors 2009,” running from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25, January. Yokohama will be overflowing with exhibitions featuring cutting-edge means of expression breaking away from existing method and media.

The City of Yokohama is helping to organize this series of events, is all part of the City’s ongoing Creative City Yokohama* initiative, which is designed to harness the arts and other creative fields as part of the urban development process. Following this initiative, the City has conducted various projects including attracting the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media on board and providing behind the scenes support for the film festival. The City is working to establish Yokohama as a focal point for the film and content industry, which is expected to be one of the biggest creative growth industries in the future, to transmit its characteristic image culture to the world and vitalize Yokohama.
