Mayor Hiroshi Nakada to Visit Singapore from June 24

Attending the Inaugural World Cities Summit (World Cities Summit 2008)

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN – Tuesday, June 17, 2008 – Hiroshi Nakada, Mayor of the City of Yokohama, will visit Singapore from June 24 to 26 to attend the inaugural World Cities Summit 2008*1. At the event, he will discuss effective public governance and urban development, two issues shared by cities around the world with representatives of mainly Pacific Rim cities, as well as officials from the World Bank and the agencies of the United Nations.

The World Cities Summit (WCS) is a series of conferences held under the theme “Liveable and Vibrant Cities.” Representatives at the municipal or city levels discuss and examine potential solutions to the problems facing modern cities, such as the development of urban infrastructure, environmental issues including climate change, as well as quality of life at a time of rapid urban growth. As the leader of the management of Yokohama, which has a number of major international companies and Japan’s second largest population, Mayor Nakada will introduce successful examples, challenges, and future visions of public-private partnerships to pursue efficient public governance and urban development.

Mayor Nakada will also attend the East Asia Summit Conference on Liveable Cities*2, a co-located event of the WCS that focuses on cities in East Asia. He will discuss challenges such as climate change and sustainable development, based on his experience in providing assistance concerning waste management, waterworks, and environmental education to Asian cities, which he has pursued as head of CITYNET*3, a regional organization of cities in Asia Pacific (president city: Yokohama).
