Yokohama to host an array of events during TICAD IV

Businesses and citizens support Africa in Yokohama

YOKOHAMA –Friday, May 23, 2008– African Fair 2008 will be held from May 28 to June 1 by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The fair, to be held as an official event of TICAD IV (the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, held May 28 to 30), will provide an opportunity for discussion with businesses and government representatives from nations around Africa, and will introduce real-world examples, methods, and opportunities in order to catalyze investment, trade, tourism, and other business with Africa.

Based on the TICAD IV theme of “Towards a Vibrant Africa,” in addition to an opportunity for business talk with the 40 African nations that will be exhibiting, African Fair 2008 will host a wide array of services, including consultation by JETRO trade and investment advisors, to create opportunities for business with Africa. Additionally, examples of business and social action programs in Africa by Japanese companies will be presented, including antipersonnel landmine removal machines, stand-alone power system for high-temperature regions combining solar battery and rechargeable battery features, and textiles with insect-repellent properties developed as a countermeasure against Malaria.

In addition to the above, other events to support Africa will also take place at various locations within Yokohama, including People's TICAD (May 25), a citizens’ conference held by Japanese and African NGOs, and “Relieve Africa’s Hunger,” a fundraising project campaign sponsored by the City of Yokohama, the U.N. World Food Program (WFP), and supporting businesses within Yokohama.
