| ■【Yokohama footnotes】vol.12 Yokohama and Africa 〜International aid through medical donations〜 |
|
The City of Yokohama is conducting international aid by donating its pharmaceutical stockpile to areas of need. Starting in 2005, medicines that are still within the validity date are being donated to NGOs after the City’s stockpile is replaced each year. In 2005 and 2006, these medicines were sent to Gedaref Province in east Sudan to be used by Rocinantes, a medical NGO working in the area.
Sudan at that time had just reached the end of its civil war and there was still turbulence in the country. However, much of international aid was directed to Darfur in west Sudan, leaving the east parts of the country short of medical assistance. Yokohama’s donation of pharmaceutical stockpile was made under such circumstances, aiming to support Sudan’s reconstruction. In June 2006, the City of Yokohama was presented a letter of appreciation from the Minister of Public Health of Gedarf Province. 【Inquiries】Health and Social Welfare Bureau Medical Policy Division TEL: 045(671)3740 |
