| [Yokohama Footnotes] Vol.10 Western-style Buildings in Yamate 〜Christmas with a foreign touch〜 |
|
The western buildings still standing in the Yamate District of Yokohama are the vestiges of a past when the district was a residential area for westerners. Still today it is a popular spot for visitors who come here to savor the foreign atmosphere.
When the port of Yokohama opened, a foreign settlement was built at Yamashita-cho but as the number of foreigners increased, the shogunate auctioned off the Yamate District as a residential area for foreigners in 1867. Over the next ten years, the plans for the new town were completed and roads, stonewalls, and gutters for drainage were constructed. Foreigners, who had been temporarily living in Japanese houses, had their houses rebuilt, creating a town of western mansions. It was not long before the foreign district at Yamate developed into a proper residential district as gas, electricity and water were installed, and churches and schools were built. However, the area sustained major damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and almost all the western mansions were destroyed. Buildings remaining today were constructed at the end of the Taisho period (1912〜1926) and in the Early Showa period (1926〜1930’s). There are about 70 western buildings still standing in Yokohama. This year the seven western mansions in the Yamate District that are the property of the City, the Museum of Tennis and Yamate House No. 68 will be decorated with a Christmas theme from various countries. Christmas events will also be organized at each of the buildings. Visitors can enjoy the historic buildings and the atmosphere of Christmas. 【Date】 Saturday, 1 December 〜 Tuesday, 25 December 【Site】 Bluff No.111 (built in 1926) ― Italy British House (built in 1937) ― U.K Bluff No. 234 (built in around 1927) ― Bulgaria Ehrisman Residence (built in 1926, restored in 1990) ― Ireland Berick Hall (built in 1930) ― France Diplomat’s House (built in 1910) ― Russia Bluff No.18 (built in 1924, restored in 1993) ― Hungary Yokohama Yamate Museum of Tennis ― U.S Bluff No. 68 ― Netherland 【References】 : http://www.hama-midorinokyokai.or.jp/seiyoukan/index.html# (Japanese) |
